Raised on This is Here

Howdy friends!

It’s been a while. I have a new recording for you!

Raised on This is a collection of my favourite Irish, Newfoundland & Celtic songs. Most of the songs are ones that I heard and sang growing up community of Freshwater, Placentia Bay. Hailing from strong Irish roots on both sides of my family, I found out in 2005 that my Grandmother, Ellen Henry from Belfast was a singer in Concert Halls in the city before she moved to Newfoundland as a war bride. My paternal Grandmother, Mollie Power also loved to sing. She was the loudest voice in Church on Sunday mornings. I wanted to record these songs for many years, as they were the ones I sang when first coming on the music scene in St. John’s, before I started writing songs.

I recruited some of my all-time faves from the Newfoundland Traditional scene to perform on Raised on This’. This recording wouldn’t have been possible with Jason Whelan’s talent & input. He performs on nearly ever song. He was my second ear for mixing the songs and mastered the CD. Featured also is the legendary Fergus O’Byrne, along with Mark Hiscock of Shanneyganock, Geoff Panting and Dave Panting of Rawlin’s Cross, Uilleann piper and whistle player, Rob Brown and Singer/Songwriter Sherry Ryan, who has performed Irish and Newfoundland songs with me every Paddy’s Day for the last 9 years in The Guinness Sisters. Last but not least are rhythm dynamos Aneirin Thomas and Ed Sutherby, who’ve been backing me for close to 20 years.

The CD Design is by Sarah Hansen and Photography is by Chris Ledrew Photography. Raised on This was recorded and mixed by me at Baygirl Music, with additional editing and assistance by Jason Whelan at Sound Solution. Jason’s guitars, bouzouki & vocals recorded by him at Sound Solution, as was ‘Pat Murphy’s Meadow’, live off the floor.

Raised on This is Available et Fred’s Records and O’Brien’s Music.

I hope you enjoy the album and please spread the word!

Random Passage Day this Saturday

Hello friends and fans!

It’s been a busy summer so far! I had an amazing time on the road for a short jaunt to Cape Breton and Nova Scotia for some shows and the Stan Roger’s 20th Anniversary festival. I have a lot of friends to thank for making it all possible, so thanks to you all (you know who you are) and also a big thank you to the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Travel Fund.

This Saturday, I will be at the Random Passage site, playing some songs for kids! I am really looking forward to performing there again and if you’re looking for something to do, there’s a whole day of fun planned for young and old alike.

Cheers and check out random passage day this Saturday, July 16!

This Saturday at the Black Sheep

Hello friends!

We’ve got a show coming up this weekend!

It’s been a while and we are stoked to be playing in one of our favorite haunts, The Black Sheep on Water Street.

It’s an early show, so it’s a rare chance for you to go home before a regular downtown show usually starts!

We’d love to see you there. If you haven’t been to the Black Sheep, it’s a wonderful, intimate venue and owner, Don Maher will guarantee you that the beer is the coldest downtown!

We hope to see you there!!

How I Remember Ron

Hello from a snow-covered St. John’s,

11 days have passed since we lost our beloved Ron Hynes.

It will take a very long time to get over the loss of such an incredible Artist, mentor and friend to the Arts Community and prolific songwriter.

Songwriters have been inspired to write songs about Ron in the past week. I am not there yet. I’m still trying to deal with it all. What i have been able to do is write this piece, that was published by The Independent:

Take care,

Colleen

The Grand Punt Race, NL Folk Fest Espace Franco et Le Black Sheep

Hello folks!

What are ye at??

It’s definitely been a while since I posted, but there are lots of new things on the go.

Coming up tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 9:30 AM is The Grand Punt Race: Townies VS. Baymen. It’s being put off by The Narrows Group, who are working to repair and restore the entrance to St. John’s Harbour. I’ll be playing a few tunes solo at the event. Come check out the races and root for your favourite Townies and/or Baymen as they race around St. John’s harbour! There will also be tickets on a beautiful punt, handcrafted in Norris Arm!

On Sunday afternoon at 2:45 PM, I’ll be playing at The Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival in Espace Franco once again. It’s become a yearly tradition! I’ll be accompanied by my best buddies Aneirin Thomas on bass and Ed Sutherby on drums. Come hang out and hear a few songs! We plan to have fun! http://nlfolk.com/fest2015b/index.php/espace-franco/ And.. I cannot wait to hear my friend and amazing singer/songwriter David Francey on the Folk Fest main stage tomorrow night!

Next Friday night, me and the b’ys take to one of our favourite haunts, The Black Sheep on Water Street! The owner, Donny Maher makes sure his beer is the coldest beer downtown. And he’ll tell you himself. It’s a cozy pub and a perfect spot to get up close and personal with your favourite band. But not too close. We are all taken now. Haha!

Enjoy the warm NL weather and hope to see you out and about!

Cheers,

Colleen

More Gigs Coming up!

Well, since my last post, it’s quite snowy here now!

The rest of the island looks like they’ll be getting more of it but it seems our Avalon Peninsula will be spared.

The I Love NL concert was postponed because of weather on Friday, and I will post details as soon as I know of another date!

The Sauce is playing this Friday, Feb. 20 at Distortion: one set at midnight. We always have a lot of fun, and with songs about everything from Great Big Sea and Shanneyganock with Danny Williams to sex to cloning body parts and dancing with Jesus Christ, how can we not?

On Thursday, February 26, I will be sharing the stage with some fine songwriters: Sean Panting and Chris Kearsey. It’s an early show: starts at 9 PM. Looking forward to this one!

Then, on Saturday, Feb. 28, the CP Band (myself, Aneirin Thomas and Ed Sutherby) take to the stage at The Black Sheep. It’s quickly becoming our favorite place to play once again as The Black Sheep. Formerly The Spur, The Victory, Scanlons and many other incarnations, we have quite the history in this room. It’s a great place to grab a pint and take in some live music, which happens 6 nights a week. I caught the Sean Panting Band there this past weekend and they Rocked!

I will be playing a rare gig at a great little pub on March 28 in Placentia called The Three Sisters! It is owned by three school/glee club friends of mine, who are sisters, named Jane, Anne and Susan. I know they like to have fun, so I am looking forward to it! I am excited to be performing out home once again, as I rarely get a chance to visit.

Also, I am excited to be performing 2 ECMA shows at The Black Sheep! One is the Friday night, April 10 with The Sauce starting at 10:30 PM, and the second is the Saturday matinee, April 11 with the CP Band staing at 7 PM. Cannot wait. It will be a busy ECMA weekend and we’re all looking forward to it!

It’s been a very busy winter for me, but I’m quite content to be doing what I’m doing and enjoying the winter so far! I hope you’re all having a good one too!

Hope to see you at some of the shows!

XO

Colleen
